Bennan Harris Compton was Born Saturday May 7, 2016 at 8:12am weighing 7LBS 12OZ & 20 Inches Long
A little back story, I was due April 30, 2016 so at this point I was six days late and trying anything to induce labor!
On the afternoon of May 6th two of my awesome girlfriends brought over a Prego Pizza from Skipolini’s. People swear that this pizza helps induce labor…
A few hours passed and nothing was happening so I decided to cook dinner then walk Oliver (I am pretty sure this was my millionth walk trying to get baby out)! I sat on the couch snuggling OIiver and decided that I wanted some Ice Cream so I hopped in the car and drove to Dairy Queen down the street. I got back home watched some TV and decided that Parker and I better start talking about how the doctor wanted to induce my Monday if B hadn’t come yet. We got in bed and started to chat about the pros and cons to induction. And just like that… BAM! Right in the middle of our convo I started having menstrual type cramps. It was 11 pm on the dot.
These cramps would come and go but by midnight they were more consistent and stronger. We started tracking the contractions, they were 30 seconds long and about 3- 4 minutes apart. I figured that I needed to do the dishes from dinner since it looked like we were going to be having a baby! We called our parents to tell them that I was having contractions and that we would keep them posted on the progress.
The yoga ball was my best friend...I just sat and rocked back and forth through each contraction as they got stronger and stronger. Parker and I just sat there joking and laughing, probably in denial that this was the real deal! The moment we had been waiting for was coming soon! I mean who is really ready for labor to happen?! Especially being our first experience!
By this time things started to get intense so we decided to was time to head to the hospital!
We got to the hospital a little after 2 am (we made it there in like 5 minutes). I was only 3cm dilated but the contractions were getting stronger and lasting 1 minute. They ended up admitting me because my blood pressure was high and my contractions were so strong. I labored for as long as possible and used fogged the mirror breathing (the nurses were commenting on how great my breathing was- Thanks to Julie Hurst and Prenatal Yoga). My contractions continued to get more painful. At 7:12am I got an epidural to help ease contraction pain and get my blood pressure down. At this time we called the parents and told them it was okay to come whenever (still expecting it to take a while longer).
Right after the epidural kicked in, the nurse came in and checked me and I was only 4cm dilated, 100% effaced and my water broke while she checked me. BUT when my water broke Bennan's head slid down and his heart rate dropped like crazy because his cord was getting cut off. The nurse ripped out one of the cords from the wall and four nurses came running in. They tried to get me into different positions but nothing was helping. They flipped me onto my hands and knees ( remember I had an epidural? Yeah...how i stayed in that position with not much feeling in my legs is beyond me).
They told me that they were prepping OR for me. Over the intercom all I heard was them paging 2 OBs and 2 anesthesiologists to get there STAT! I was calm but kind of freaking out on the inside. They threw scrubs to Parker and told him to scrub up and meet us in the OR. They wheeled me back to the OR (still on my hands and knees, thankfully the nice nurse covered me with a blanket lol) and then ended up getting Bennan's heart rate stable but still wanted to take him via c section.
The doctor was amazing and the surgery took like 12 minutes. Bennan was crying before they got him all the way out of my stomach. It was such a relief to hear that little cry. They got me all stitched up and took me to recovery. The nurses immediately gave Bennan to Parker and then they put him on my chest for skin to skin. He started nursing right away. Seeing that sweet little face and holding his tiny hands was the best moment of my life. Just knowing that Parker and I created this precious little life was incredible.
The nurses and doctor kept telling all of my family that I was the most calm person they have ever performed an emergency C section on. This is totally not how I thought his birth would go but I really think staying calm and being so open really helped. I am just so happy to have a healthy and beautiful baby! We are truly blessed!
P.S. May 7th was a very significant date for parker and i! We met at Senior Ball on May 7, 2005 and the rest is history!
